The Essence of Maimonides

Nov 1, 2005

Dr. Sherwin B. Nuland, author and clinical professor of surgery at Yale University, speaks about his 2005 book, Maimonides, part of publisher Schocken and Nextbook’s “Jewish Encounters” series. Maimonides examines the life and legacy of Moses Maimonides, a Jewish philosopher and physician. Dr. Nuland explains how he became involved with the “Jewish Encounters” project, including his initial hesitation to contribute to the already existing and extensive canon of Maimonides interpretation and commentary. He speaks about Maimonides’ early life, his writing and philosophy, and the impact of his work, particularly The Guide for the Perplexed. Dr. Nuland also specifically reflects on the influence of Maimonides on the historic and contemporary medical field. The lecture is followed with questions from the audience.
