While Jews most often associated with the Civil Rights Movement include Rabbi Abraham Heschel and the martyrs Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner, another significant figure deserves recognition: Charles McDew, the chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee during its most dangerous early days. Robin Washington, editor-at-large of the Forward, shares McDew’s life, their personal connection as Black Jews, and an excerpt from McDew’s posthumously published memoir, Tell The Story.

Robin Washington

A founder of the Alliance of Black Jews, Robin Washington is the editor-at-large of the Forward. He is also a host for Wisconsin Public Radio and previously was an editorial board member of the Boston Globe and editor-in-chief of the Duluth News Tribune. Raised in Chicago by Black and Jewish civil rights activists, Robin participated in sit-ins and protests when he was three years old — events he recalls fondly as “family outings.” He later chronicled the movement in his acclaimed PBS documentary, You Don’t Have to Ride Jim Crow!
