Steve Kornacki: Inside Gerrymandering

Feb 4, 2013

MSNBC Host and Salon.com reporter Steve Kornacki recently spoke with us about a largely untold part of the 2012 election—congressional gerrymandering.

Even though Democrats received 1.5 million more  votes than Republicans nationwide, they still lost the House of Representatives. Kornacki explains how re-drawing Congressional district lines led to that result:

"You have a smaller number of districts where Democrats have 80, 90, 95 percent of the vote...and then the rest of the state will be districts where Republicans maybe carry 55, 60, 65 percent. What it means is Democrats win the state overall and win the presidential election overall, but they lose a lot of these House districts because the population is much more spread out for Republicans."

Do you think gerrymandering is fair? If not, how would you change it?
