Reel Pieces™ Spotlights Women in Film: Actor-Writer-Director Nadine Labaki
Nadine Labaki's latest movie, Capernaum—Lebanon's entry for the Best Foreign-Language Film Academy Award—won the Jury Prize at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. It tells the story of a 12-year-old boy who sues his parents for bringing him into the world. As the review in Variety praised, "Proving herself an astonishingly accomplished director of non-professional performers as well as a measured storyteller, Labaki draws attention to the plight of children in Beirut’s slums and the Kafka-esque bind of people without ID cards. While this is unquestionably an issue film, it tackles its subject with intelligence and heart."
Labaki's previous movies include Caramel (2007) and Where Do We Go Now?, which won the Audience Award at the 2011 Toronto Film Festival.
