Reel Pieces with Annette Insdorf: Swan Song Actor and Producer Mahershala Ali, plus Writer-Director Benjamin Cleary in Conversation

Dec 14, 2021

Moderator Annette Insdorf will interview Mahershala Ali. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor twice — for Moonlight (2017) and Green Book (2018) — and played Boggs in The Hunger Games. He is known to TV audiences from the HBO series True Detective (2019) as well as Treme (2011-12), and for playing Remy Danton in House of Cards. He will be joined by the film’s writer-director Benjamin Cleary.

Ali stars as Cameron in Swan Song, a touching and philosophically provocative drama set in the near future. A first feature for Benjamin Cleary (Oscar winner for Stutterer, Best Live-Action short of 2015), it co-stars Glenn Close as a doctor in charge of a facility that can create human duplicates. Naomie Harris — Ali's co-star in Moonlight — plays Cam’s loving wife. The review in Variety praised, “Part unconventionally-deconstructed love story, part high-concept sci-fi-tinged melancholic drama, the ultra-sleek, elegantly-realized tale is centered on one man’s journey toward answers and self-resolve in the face of death.”
