Annette Insdorf will interview director Ran Tal after the New York premiere of 1341 Frames of Love and War (90 minutes).
The acclaimed Israeli photo-journalist Micha Bar-Am - who was the regional photographer for The New York Times from 1968-1992 - allowed Tal access to his vast archive of negatives, comprising more than fifty years of Israeli history. His striking photos reveal the high personal cost of documenting atrocities and wars. Together with Bar-Am’s verbal recollections (and those of his family), the film provides an intimate portrait of an artist, as well as a meditation on memory, violence and identity. It was selected by prestigious film festivals including Berlin, Telluride, and DocAviv (where it won the Best Director Award).
Ran Tal’s previous films include Children of the Sun, winner of the Best Documentary Prize at the 2007 Jerusalem Film Festival, and Gitai in Search of the Carmel (2009), about the renowned director Amos Gitai. He heads the MFA Documentary Film program at Tel Aviv University, and is the founder and editor of an online magazine for discussion and critique of documentaries.
