Music at the Turn of the Century: James Huneker and America's Coming of Age

Jan 20, 1987

John Gross, senior book editor and critic at The New York Times at the time of this recording, talks about the field of music criticism, with a focus James Huneker, an important critic in the music, theater, book, and art domains. Gross examines Huneker’s career and literary achievements, including his book, Mezzotints in Modern Music, originally published in 1905. He assesses the ways in which Huneker changed attitudes about “high culture” in music and explores the impact of the “artistic coming of age” on American musical tastes, past and present. Following his talk, Gross speaks with Samuel Lipman, critic and publisher of The New Criterion at the time of this recording, and their discussion includes audience questions. This event is part of a series originally presented in cooperation with The New Criterion magazine.
