Matthew Broderick, Shawn Snyder, and Géza Röhrig on To Dust: Reel Pieces with Annette Insdorf

Jan 20, 2019

Join Reel Pieces moderator and Columbia University professor Annette Insdorf for a conversation with renowned actor Matthew Broderick, along with two special guests — co-star Géza Röhrig and director Shawn Snyder.

In addition to his stellar Broadway career, Broderick’s film work includes a variety of both mainstream and independent hits. These include WarGames, On Valentine’s Day, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Biloxi Blues, Torch Song Trilogy, Family Business, Glory, The Freshman, The Cable Guy, Election, You Can Count on Me, The Producers, Then She Found Me, and the voice of Simba in The Lion King. He also directed, produced, and starred in Infinity (1996).

When To Dust premiered at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival, it won the Audience Award for Narrative Film, as well as “Best New Narrative Director” for Shawn Snyder. His original and provocative first feature treats mourning with a surprisingly light touch. Géza Röhrig—who starred in the Oscar-winning Holocaust drama Son of Saul—plays a Hasidic cantor, distraught by his wife’s untimely death. He struggles to find religious solace while secretly obsessing over how her body will decay. When he seeks scientific assistance, Albert (Broderick)—a bumbling community college biology professor—reluctantly helps him.
