In this class, we’ll be writing poems that get creative about the way we see the world through the limits of our windows.

We’ll think about the many lives of the world as we see and hear it through our windows by thinking about what we’ve seen in the past through our windows, how our views have changed these days, and we’ll practice imagining the things we’d like to see out our windows in the future (realistic OR magical!). We’ll read a poem by José Olivarez and I’ll share one of my own, which will feature a pig on a leash! And don’t worry, all windows are welcome, whether your window looks out onto the street, onto a park, onto another building or onto another apartment. Recommended for upper middle school and high school age students.

Andy Powell is a School Coordinator and a Teaching Artist for DreamYard in the Bronx. This year he’s taught classes with students in elementary school, middle school, high school AND college! He founded DreamYard’s Rad(ical) Poetry Consortium for community-engaged poets to gather and share practices and to create new ones with radical faculty like Aracelis Girmay, Nate Marshall, Kay Ulanday Barrett and Denice Frohman, and to have a Community Reading on DreamYard’s roof (this year, virtually!). He has a chapbook forthcoming from Best Buds! Collective. Andy taught poetry writing for the Saturday Program at Cooper Union for high school visual art students and worked to collaborate with them on their visual art practice. He is very excited for your poems! While thinking about this workshop he remembered that more than once outside his window he has seen a person walking a pig on a leash!
