Join co-creator and executive producer Sara Bareilles along with fellow co-creator and executive producer Jessie Nelson, and star Brittany O’Grady discussing their inspiring new Apple TV+ series Little Voice—the story of a uniquely talented performer struggling fulfill her dreams in NYC while navigating rejection, love, and complicated family issues. Moderated by Entertainment Weekly’s Maureen Lenker, Bareilles, Nelson, and O’Grady discuss the making of the series and the original songs the Grammy-winning and Tony-nominated Bareilles wrote for it—along with the eclectic musicality of the city that inspired it, stories from behind the scenes, and much more.

Little Voice is produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Trek, Lost), Sara Bareilles, Jessie Nelson (I Am Sam” Stepmom, Waitress) and Ben Stephenson (Westworld) are executive producers. Nelson also wrote and directed the first episode.

Sara Bareilles

Sara Bareilles (Series Co-Creator / Executive Producer) first achieved mainstream critical praise in 2007 with her widely successful hit "Love Song,” which reached No. 1 in 22 countries around the world from her debut album Little Voice. Since then, Bareilles has taken home a Grammy award, received seven Grammy nominations, two Tony nominations and three Emmy nominations. Her book, Sounds Like Me: My Life (So Far) in Song, was released in the fall of 2015 by Simon & Schuster and is a New York Times bestseller.

Making her Broadway debut, Bareilles composed the music and lyrics for Waitress, and in 2017, she made her acting debut in the musical’s leading role.

On April 5, 2019 Bareilles released her fifth full-length and first album of original material since 2013, entitled Amidst the Chaos.

For Bareilles’ latest body of work, she joined forces in the studio with legendary Academy Award-winning producer, T Bone Burnett. As a result, the album spotlights her voice as a singer and storyteller like never before, while making an enduring statement.

Jesse Nelson

Jesse Nelson (Series Co-Creator / Lead Writer / Director / Executive Producer) wrote the musical Waitress with music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles. Waitress ran on Broadway for four years then moved to the West End of London to much acclaim.

Prior to Waitress, Nelson wrote, directed and produced Corrina Corrina and I Am Sam, starring Sean Penn, who received an Academy Award nomination for his performance. She also directed Curb Your Enthusiasm, the first female director to do so, and Love the Coopers with Diane Keaton. Her other writing credits include Step Mom and The Story of Us. She served as producer on Fred Claus and Danny Collins.

In London, Nelson directed the musical Alice by Heart which she co-wrote with Steven Sater. Duncan Sheik did the music that ran at the National Theater Connections Program and again at MCC in New York.

In addition to her film, television, and theatre credits, Nelson wrote the children's book Labracadabra.

Nelson began her career as an actress at The Public Theater in New York as part of the award-winning experimental theater company Mabou Mines as well as performing in the New York Shakespeare Festival. She continues to be the Artistic Director of the Sundance Screenwriters Lab.

Brittany O’Grady

Brittany O’Grady (Bess) is best known for playing the role of Simone in Lee Daniels’ Fox series Star. Little Voice marks O’Grady’s return to a leading role. Her other credits include the Philip Noyce feature Above Suspicion, opposite Emilia Clarke, and a recurring role on CW series The Messengers. Recently, O’Grady appeared in the Blumhouse feature Black Christmas.
