David L. Reich, MD, graduated from the Penn State-Jefferson Cooperative Program in Medicine in 1982. He completed two years of surgery residency at Harbor/UCLA Medical Center, and then arrived at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in 1984 and completed a residency in anesthesiology and a fellowship in cardiothoracic anesthesia in 1987. In 1990, Dr. Reich was named co-director of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia. He served as Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology from 2004 to 2014 and has been President and Chief Operating Officer of The Mount Sinai Hospital and President of Mount Sinai Queens since 2013.

Dr. Reich’s research interests include neurocognitive outcome following cardiac and aortic surgery, outcome effects of intraoperative hemodynamics, medical informatics, hemodynamic monitoring and data science-driven clinical decision support. He has published approximately 150 peer-reviewed articles, 30 invited articles or editorials, and 37 book chapters. He is associate editor of the leading subspecialty textbook Cardiac Anesthesia and was lead editor on the first edition of Monitoring in Anesthesia and Perioperative Care. He is co-editor of the first editions of Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography and of Neuroprotection in Critical Care and Perioperative Medicine. Dr. Reich serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia.

At Mount Sinai, Dr. Reich has served on numerous hospital, school, and Health System committees, and was President of the Mount Sinai Hospital Medical Board in 2011-2012. He participates in medical student education as the course director of the Law and Business of Medicine module for the medical school. He was executive sponsor of the Institute for Critical Care Medicine at Mount Sinai, which unites all adult and pediatric intensive care units to enhance safety and oversees a rapid response team and a line-placement team.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning have been employed by a team led by Dr. Reich to create clinical decision support tools. Currently, clinical decision support is used at Mount Sinai to identify malnutrition, clinical deterioration requiring activation of a rapid response team, palliative care team activation in oncology settings, and discharge date prediction, among other applications.

Dr. Reich is the executive sponsor of the Mount Sinai Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery (CTMS). With a surgical program that initiated in 2016, CTMS is among the busiest gender affirmation surgery programs worldwide, training one surgical fellow annually. The comprehensive approach to clinical care, research, education, and community outreach has brought the program to international prominence in the field.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Reich was a key leader for the Mount Sinai Health System in several areas. He serves as executive sponsor of laboratory services and led the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) lab implementation of the first quantitative test for antibody measurement. He leads a COVID-19 saliva screening program that performs approximately 100,000 tests per month for schoolchildren, school staff, transit workers, community testing, and commercial clients. He spearheaded coordination between scientists in the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the hospitals in creating an institutional resource that facilitates data scientists’ investigations of COVID-19 risk factors and predictive analytics.

Dr. Reich was named the Horace W. Goldsmith Professor of Anesthesiology in 2004 and received the Mount Sinai Jacobi Medallion in 2014. He has been honored by the American Heart Association, Pace University, the Society of Technology in Anesthesia, and the Israeli Society of Anesthesiologists. He has secondary academic appointments as Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Human Health, and Professor of Pathology, Molecular and Cell-Based Medicine.

Florian Krammer, PhD, graduated from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, in Vienna in 2010. He received his postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Peter Palese, PhD, at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, working on hemagglutinin stalk-based immunity and universal influenza virus vaccines. In 2014 he became an independent principal investigator and is currently Mount Sinai Professor of Vaccinology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Krammer’s work focuses on understanding the mechanisms of interactions between antibodies and viral surface glycoproteins and on translating this work into novel, broadly protective vaccines and therapeutics. The main target is influenza virus, but he is also working on coronaviruses, flaviviruses, hantaviruses, filoviruses, and arenaviruses. He has published more than 300 papers on these topics. Since 2019, Dr. Krammer has served as principal investigator of the Sinai-Emory Multi-Institutional Collaborative Influenza Vaccine Innovation Center (SEM-CIVIC), which develops improved seasonal and universal influenza virus vaccines that induce long-lasting protection against drifted seasonal, zoonotic, and future pandemic influenza viruses.

Jessica Montanaro, MSN, RN, has served as the Assistant Nursing Care Coordinator for the past ten years in the Medical-Surgical Trauma ICU at Mount Sinai Morningside. Currently working on her DNP, Jessica is a critical care nurse, educator, and nurse consultant with 20 years of experience specializing in leadership, critical thinking, teaching, and public speaking. Her passion is transforming nursing knowledge into quality clinical care practices while incorporating interdisciplinary collaboration. She has co-authored several abstracts on critical care policies and presented her work nationally. She is the author of “Using in situ Simulation to Develop a Prone Positioning Protocol for Patients With ARDS” in the journal Critical Care Nurse—a scholarly article that shared a lifesaving technique that Jessica and colleagues used in the epicenter of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

Deborah Schupack is a novelist, health care journalist, and editor who has written extensively about the intersection of science and medicine. Her latest book is Relentless, How a Leading New York City Health System Mobilized to Battle the Greatest Health Crisis of Our Era. She is also the author of two novels, Sylvan Street and The Boy on the Bus, and her articles have appeared in academic publications and in national newspapers and magazines.
