Joe Mantello and Terrence McNally
Playwright Wendy Wasserstein interviews Joe Mantello and Terrence McNally about their collaboration and production of McNally’s Love! Valour! Compassion!, a play about a group of gay friends vacationing together at a lakeside home over three holiday weekends one summer. Directed by Mantello, it first premiered off-Broadway in 1994 before being transferred to Broadway in 1995. Mantello and McNally discuss how theater depicts changes in American society and culture, and they share their opinions and experiences with the creation of film adaptions of plays. Terrence McNally is a Tony Awarding-winning playwright, whose writing credits includes his musical adaptations of Kiss of the Spider Woman and Ragtime. Joe Mantello is an actor and theater director, known for his role as Louis Ironson in Angels in America.
