Jhumpa Lahiri: Whereabouts

In Conversation with Howard Norman

Apr 27, 2021

Jhumpa Lahiri—acclaimed author of Interpreter of Maladies, The Namesake, and Unaccustomed Earth—discusses her new novel, Whereabouts.

Written in Italian and translated into English by the author, Whereabouts follows a woman wavering between stasis and movement, between the need to belong and the refusal to form lasting ties, as she wanders the parks, piazzas, coffee shops and museums of the unnamed Italian city she calls home. “A beautifully written portrait of a life in passage that captures the hopes, frustrations, and longings of solitude and remembrance,” writes Publishers Weekly.
