Boy meets girl—a story we’ve seen thousands of times, though never quite like this. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal have heated up screens as the stars of Hulu’s Normal People, the critically acclaimed limited-series adaptation of Sally Rooney’s bestselling novel. They play Marianne and Connell, high-school classmates in small-town Ireland who come from drastically different backgrounds—he’s popular and working-class, she’s an outcast from a wealthy family—but connect, intimately and deeply, nonetheless. The series follows them over several years, as they move to Dublin for college, fall in and out of a romantic relationship, but always stay in love. Join the two breakout actors in conversation with Entertainment Weekly’s David Canfield as they discuss bringing a beloved book to life, why the series is already so resonant with viewers, and what it was like to film those steamy sex scenes.

Daisy Edgar-Jones trained with National Youth Theatre before landing her first role at the age of 17 as a series regular in the British Comedy-Drama Cold Feet alongside James Nesbitt for ITV. Her other TV credits include Silent Witness (BBC), Outnumbered: Christmas Special (BBC), Gentleman Jack (HBO/BBC). Daisy was seen in War of the Worlds (CANAL PLUS) opposite Gabriel Byrne and Elizabeth McGovern earlier this year.

Last year she shot an independent coming-of-age feature film Pond Life which was directed by Bill Buckhurst and produced by Open Palm Films.

Daisy has recently finished filming as lead role Marianne in the adaptation of the Sally Broome novel Normal People directed by Lenny Abrahamson. The highly anticipated series will launch in the UK on BB3 on  April 26 and in the US on Hulu on April 29.

In February of 2020 Daisy appeared as Zara in Mike Barlett’s Albion, at the Almeida Theatre. The play returned following a sell-out run in 2017 and was later dubbed The Telegraph’s “Play of the Year.”

Paul Mescal trained at The Lir Academy, Ireland’s National Academy of Dramatic Art. Immediately after graduating, Paul was cast in the title role of The Great Gatsby at Dublin’s prestigious Gate Theatre. This was the first of several consecutive leading stage roles in both Dublin and London. His credits include: The Red Shoes, Asking For It, The Plough and the Stars, A Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Paul has also just finished shooting Lisa McGee’s new TV drama The Deceived and short film Drifting. In January 2020, Paul played the title role in Martin McDonagh’s critically-acclaimed The Lieutenant of Inishmore, to outstanding reviews.

Paul plays the lead role of Connell in the adaptation of the Sally Rooney novel Normal People, directed by Lenny Abrahamson.
