How Youth Can Change Washington: How Do Young People Choose a Career?

Jan 22, 2013

In this clip, the panel answers an audience question from an 18-year-old New York University freshman on deciding a career path.

New York Councilman Joel Rivera urged getting involved from a young age:

Get involved with your local Democratic organization or Republican organization...to make sure you understand how things happen within the political process. If you get involved with your young political organization within your community, you will see that you have an opportunity to get your voice heard."
Moderator Ari Melber advised not to be caught up on titles:
Titles you can only get from somebody else because somebody's got to hire you or choose you, but roles are something you usually have to decide for yourself.
Melber continued with his own story:
When I started writing first...I was writing for free on websites, but I would tell people 'yea I'm a writer.' Sometimes it felt weird coming out of my mouth, but then eventually I did become more of a published writer.
