As part of 92Y's ongoing partnership with Salon.com, senior writer Andrew O'Hehir spoke with us about the validity behind the view of America becoming a dystopia. O'Hehir talks about the decay of the country over recent years as a "nation state" and draws comparisons between present day America and cult favorites like George Orwell's 1984 and Aldous Huxley's Brave New World.
Although he sees a lot of negative things being done by the government, O'Hehir holds out hope. "It isn't about one guy coming into power and fixing everything. The force for change in this society still lies in the people."
He continues, "It doesn't have to be this way, we don't have to have the government spying on us all the time, we don't have to have overseas wars that we're not in control of that are just ruining our reputation. Other paths are possible."
