Join Dr. Ellen Scherl and Dr. Louis Bridges, Jr. for an enlightening discussion on the connection between arthritis and IBD as well as the latest research on treatments for each condition. You can expect to walk away from this talk with further knowledge on the most current recommended dietary interventions, recommended medications versus lifestyle changes, an understanding of the most current disease classifications, and the role of bacteria in the gut in relation to both IBD and arthritis. Epigenetics will also be touched upon in relation to these conditions and if there is evidence to support the role of improving ones’ environment and behaviors to alleviate or eliminate symptoms. Both Dr. Scherl, an expert in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, and Dr. Bridges, an expert in arthritis and rheumatology, are leaders in their respective fields and look forward to an informative discussion on the links between both conditions, what we know presently to be best practice in treatments, and how their teams continually unlock new critical findings and ties between the conditions to help alleviate symptoms in both IBD and arthritis.

Ellen J. Scherl MD is Professor of Clinical Medicine and the Jill Roberts Professor of Inflammatory Bowel Disease at Weill Cornell Medical College/New York Presbyterian Hospital, where she is the Research Director and Founding Director of the Jill Roberts Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center. Dr. Scherl is a world-renowned expert in Inflammatory Bowel Disease specializing in Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Dr. Scherl is committed to advancing the science of IBD, and translating laboratory discoveries into improving patient lives. Castle Connolly has consistently honored Dr Scherl as one of America's Top Doctors® in 2020 and celebrates New York Metro Top Doctors 15th Anniversary 2020. She is the 2020 honoree for the CCF Humanitarian of the Year Award. She has received the 2012 CCFÀ Woman of the year award 2008 AGA award for Outstanding  Women In Science and in 2007 was awarded the NYSGE Florence Lefcourt Distinguished Service Award.

Louis Bridges, Jr., MD, PhD

Louis Bridges, Jr., MD, PhD has served as Physician-in-Chief and Chair of the Department of Medicine at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) and Chief of the Division of Rheumatology at HSS and at Weill Cornell Medical College since 2020. Dr. Bridges is immediate Past President of the Rheumatology Research Foundation and a former member of Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR).  He received the UAB Department of Medicine’s Max Cooper Award for Research Excellence and the UAB School of Public Health’s Sam Brown Bridge Builder Award. He is former Co-Editor of Arthritis & Rheumatology and past Chair of the NIH Arthritis, Musculoskeletal, and Skin Study Section.  His research focus is rheumatoid arthritis susceptibility, autoantibodies, and biomarkers of treatment response. He has authored more than 170 manuscripts, many book chapters, and served as editor of three books.
