Groove Denied: Stephen Malkmus in Conversation with Vanity Fair's Michael Hogan

Apr 30, 2019

What made Stephen Malkmus, frontman of legendary indie rock bands Pavement and the Jicks, create an entire solo record of electronic music?

Groove Denied, out on Matador Records on March 15, is a major departure for Malkmus, and his first solo record since the formation of the Jicks in 2001. This off-kilter, synth-heavy dance music is a far cry from Pavement’s classic Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, or pretty much anything else that Malkmus has ever made. Join us as Malkmus talks to Vanity Fair’s Michael Hogan about the early 1980s DIY synth sound that inspired the album, shaking himself out of his old musical routines, and much more.
