About Women
Gloria Steinem
American actress, playwright, and professor Anna Deavere Smith moderates a conversation with feminist activist Gloria Steinem. This program is part of the Ruth and Oliver Stanton About Women series. Steinem promotes the recently released second edition of her book, Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions (1983) and comments on what she perceives as a simultaneous forward movement and stagnation in American politics. They discuss public reactions to the recently delivered not-guilty verdict in the O.J. Simpson trial and reflect on other intersections of race and gender in American socialization and activism. Steinem expresses her specific concern that the outcome of the trial will lead the public to assume that people of color are treated more fairly by the legal system than they actually are. Smith and Steinem also discuss sexism, ageism, and abortion access in the United States. The discussion is followed with questions from the audience.
