Gloria Bell - Conversation with Julianne Moore and Sebastián Lelio: Reel Pieces with Annette Insdorf

Mar 5, 2019

Moderator Annette Insdorf interviews Julianne Moore and Sebastián Lelio.

Julianne Moore, who won the Best Actress Oscar for Still Alice (2014), is best known for her roles in Boogie Nights, The Big Lebowski, The End of the Affair, Magnolia, Far from Heaven, and The Hours. Her recent work includes Children of Men, The Kids Are All Right, Maggie’s Plan, The Hunger Games, Wonderstruck, and playing Sarah Palin in the HBO film Game Change, for which she won the Emmy and Golden Globe.

She's joined onstage by Sebastián Lelio, whose Chilean drama A Fantastic Woman (2017) won the Academy Award for Best Foreign-Language Film. His first English-language movie was Disobedience (2018), which starred Rachel Weisz, Rachel McAdams, and Alessandro Nivola as observant Jewish characters in contemporary London.

Gloria Bell is the much-anticipated American remake of Lelio’s award winning Chilean film Gloria (2013). It follows a middle-aged California divorcee who is still open to romance and adventure, especially when Gloria meets recently divorced Arnold (a revelatory John Turturro). As Eric Kohn wrote in Indiewire, “Moore’s compassionate performance confirms the strength of the original and its beloved heroine’s universal appeal. More than that, Gloria Bell proves that the best stories can be told endlessly, so long as they’re told well.”
