Frank Rich
Radio talk show host Leonard Lopate moderates a conversation with New York Times op-ed columnist Frank Rich about his new memoir, Ghost Light (2000). From 1980 to 1993, Rich was the chief theater critic for The New York Times. This event is part of the Books and Breakfast discussion series, sponsored by Barnes and Noble. Rich shares how he became interested in theater, explaining that it became “a fantasy or an escape” for him following his parents’ divorce. He reflects on his childhood in Washington D.C. and his complicated relationship with his stepfather, who often took him to shows in D.C. and New York. Rich also discusses his time as a critic and the backlash he frequently experienced–he became known as “the Butcher of Broadway” for his critical reviews. The discussion is followed with questions from the audience.
