Films of Woody Allen
Jeremy Dauber, Atran Professor of Yiddish Language, Literature, and Culture at Columbia University, speaks about the films of Woody Allen from a Jewish perspective. This is the first of a series of four lectures on Jewish-American filmmakers. Dauber shares biographical context about Allen’s life and career and then walks through some of Allen’s notable films. To guide the lecture and discussion, Dauber shares movie clips and questions how each body of work represents Woody Allen as a Jewish-American filmmaker. He also comments on Allen’s own opposition to being labeled specifically as a Jewish-American filmmaker, and how that opposition presents in his films. The lecture is followed with questions from the audience.
