Hanna Gray, president of the University of Chicago, delivers the second annual Goldberg Lecture at The 92nd Street Y. The Goldberg Lecture series was created in memory of Monica Dennis Goldberg and serves as an annual forum to honor women of high achievement. Reflecting on her experience as a scholar and academic administrator, Gray considers what it means to lead a university–to be in the vocation of what she describes as liberal, or genuine, learning. She contends that liberal learning depends on context and critical judgement and continuously explores and challenges “the relatedness of things” across disciplines and time. Gray references texts from Cicero, Alfred North Whitehead, and T.S. Elliot in order to define and reflect on the ultimate role of education and the university in society. Following the lecture, Dr. Shirley Strum, president of Queens College, moderates a discussion with Gray, including questions from the audience.
