David Plouffe on First Debate: “We Had Better Second and Third Debates Because of the Catastrophe”

Mar 17, 2013

Former Obama campaign manager and senior adviser David Plouffe spoke with PBS’s Jeff Greenfield on March 17, 2013 at 92Y. In this clip, Plouffe responds to a YouTube question on President Obama’s much criticized first 2012 debate performance vs. Governor Mitt Romney.

Plouffe acknowledges the poor performance impacted the “atmospherics greatly” while emboldening the Republican Party to think victory was in sight, but it didn’t change the actual poll numbers of the race.

Plouffe also saw a silver lining from the first debate:

We had better second and third debates because of the catastrophe.

Do you think President Obama’s poor first debate performance helped him win the next two?
