One of our favorite examples of people on opposite sides of the political spectrum are Ted Olson and David Boies, who were the opposing lawyers in Bush v. Gore, the Supreme Court case that decided the outcome of the presidential election in 2000. Boies consistently supports Democratic and liberal causes, while Olson supports conservative and Republican ones, but the two are good friends. Even more strikingly, they have joined forces in the fight to overturn Prop 8, California’s ban on gay marriage. The case is likely headed to the Supreme Court, and at a recent talk here, New York Times op-ed columnist Bill Keller asked Boies and Olson if they were concerned about bringing this case before the Court, since a ruling against them might set back the entire gay rights movement.
David Boies is the founder and chairman of Boies, Schiller & Flexner. Ted Olson is a partner in Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and a former solicitor general of the United States.
