Spotlight on Antisemitism: The New York Times’ Bret Stephens in Conversation with Rabbi Peter J. Rubinstein

Join New York Times opinion columnist Bret Stephens with Rabbi Peter J. Rubinstein for an urgent conversation on some of today’s most pressing issues: the current political and humanitarian crisis in Ukraine; and the recent wave of antisemitism in America and abroad. More than three years after the deadly attack on the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, it has become painfully clear that antisemitism cannot be ignored or wished away — but bigotry against Jews in its current form, Bret Stephens argues, comes from across the political spectrum and does not neatly adhere to old definitions of antisemitism. Hear him and Rabbi Rubinstein discuss the phenomenon of contemporary anti-Jewish hate, its pernicious effects on our culture and democracy, and what we can all do to fight for a more just society for everyone.

Bret L. Stephens joined The New York Times as an Op-Ed columnist in April 2017. His column appears Thursday and Saturday.

Mr. Stephens came to The Times after a long career with The Wall Street Journal, where he was most recently deputy editorial page editor and, for 11 years, a foreign affairs columnist. Before that, he was editor in chief of The Jerusalem Post. At The Post he oversaw the paper’s news, editorial and digital operations and its international editions, and also wrote a weekly column. He has reported from around the world and interviewed scores of world leaders.

Mr. Stephens is the author of America in Retreat: The New Isolationism and the Coming Global Disorder, released in November 2014. He is is the recipient of numerous awards and distinctions, including two honorary doctorates and the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for commentary. He was raised in Mexico City and holds a B.A. from the University of Chicago and an MSc. from the London School of Economics. He and his wife, Corinna da Fonseca-Wollheim, a music critic for The Times, live with their three children in New York and Hamburg, Germany.

He is also the editor-in-chief of Sapir, a journal exploring the future of the American Jewish community and its intersection with cultural, social, and political issues.

Rabbi Peter Rubinstein

Peter J. Rubinstein is Director of Jewish Community and the Bronfman Center for Jewish Life at the 92nd Street Y since 2014. In this capacity, he oversees Jewish content and programming within the Bronfman Center, collaborates with staff throughout the institution on innovative programs related to Jewish themes, and forges new collaborations with faith leaders both within and beyond the Jewish community.

He is also the Rabbi Emeritus of Central Synagogue where he served as the Senior Rabbi for 23 years. Prior to his position at Central Synagogue, Rabbi Rubinstein served as the Rabbi of Woodlands Community Temple in White Plains, New York and Peninsula Temple Beth El in San Mateo, California.

He is the immediate past Chair of the Partnership of Faith in New York City, which includes the senior clergy of the city’s major congregations and was co-president of the US Board of the Tony Blair Faith Foundation. He is the Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Auburn Theological Seminary in New York City and is on the Board of the New York Region of the American Jewish Committee and Co-Chair of its Rabbinic Round Table. He is presently the director of the Be Wise Fellowship in Jewish Entrepreneurialism at the HUC-JIR in New York City. He was the long-time rabbinic Chair of the NCRCR.

Rabbi Rubinstein is a founder of the Rabbinic Council of the World Union for Progressive Judaism and was long time Rabbinic Chair of the NCRCR. He was ranked number three in Newsweek’s 2012 list of “America’s 50 Most Influential Rabbis” and was named one of the 28 “2014 America’s Most Inspiring Rabbis” by The Jewish Daily Forward.

Rabbi Rubinstein graduated from Amherst College and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree by Amherst College in 2017. His essay "A Search for Truth: A Touchstone of our Judgement" is included in JFK The Last Speech (2018). He co-authored “Innovation in All Generation” which appeared in the Winter 2017 edition of the The Reform Jewish Quarterly.
