Laura Matthews, a book editor at Glamour Magazine at the time of this recording, moderates a discussion with author Amy Tan. Tan reads excerpts from her 1989 novel, The Joy Luck Club, which follows the lives of four immigrant Chinese mothers and their American-born daughters, connected through their mahjong group, The Joy Luck Club. Matthews and Tan discuss the novel’s themes, including the relationship between mothers and daughters and the development of the female characters throughout the story, as well as how Tan’s own experiences influenced her storytelling. The discussion concludes with audience questions.
