Anthony Mackie, Nia Long and Dr. Noelle Trent with Michele Norris: A Juneteeth Conversation around Apple's The Banker

Presented in collaboration with Apple TV+, the National Civil Rights Museum and 92Y

Jun 19, 2020

In celebration of Juneteenth, 92Y hosts a special conversation with star and executive producer of Apple’s acclaimed film The Banker, Anthony Mackie, and star Nia Long, alongside Director of Interpretation, Collections and Education at the National Civil Rights Museum, Dr. Noelle Trent. The discussion centers on the film’s empowering themes of positive social change, and is moderated by journalist Michele Norris.

Inspired by true events, The Banker centers on revolutionary businessmen Bernard Garrett (Anthony Mackie) and Joe Morris (Samuel L. Jackson), two unsung heroes who helped pave the way for fair housing and lending laws that are still being put to the test today in the United States. Along with Garrett’s wife Eunice (Nia Long), they devised an audacious and risky plan to take on the racist establishment of the 1960s by helping other African Americans pursue the American dream. Their bravery and determination led to the Fair Housing Act of 1968, which made it illegal to refuse to sell or rent property on the basis of race, religion or gender.

The Banker is available to customers all around the world to watch for free from June 18-30, 2020, on the Apple TV app.
