The White Tiger has been hailed as a brilliant cinematic adaptation of the Booker Prize-winning novel by Aravind Adiga. Netflix (currently streaming the film) describes it as an “epic journey of a poor Indian driver (Adarsh Gourav) who uses his wit and cunning to break free from servitude to his rich masters (Rajkummar Rao and Priyanka Chopra Jonas) and rise to the top of the heap.”

Moderator Annette Insdorf will interview Ramin Bahrani — a filmmaker hailed by Roger Ebert in 2009 as “the new great American director” — live and she will include audience questions. Bahrani’s previous films include 99 Homes (2014), an urgent, indignant drama set during the economic crisis that forces a decent man into morally dubious activity in 2010. His Fahrenheit 451 (2018) is an adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s novel that’s fiercely committed to the love of books, art, culture, and freedom. And his early films — Man Push Cart (05), Chop Shop (07) and Goodbye Solo (08) — established him as a leading artist of American independent cinema. He is a professor of film directing at Columbia University’s School of the Arts.

Ramin Bahrani

Ramin Bahrani is the Iranian American writer, director, and producer of the Netflix feature film, The White Tiger, based on the Man Booker Prize-winning novel. As the internationally renowned, award-winning writer/director/producer of critically-acclaimed films — including Man Push Cart, Chop Shop, Goodbye Solo, At Any Price, and 99 Homes — legendary film critic Roger Ebert proclaimed Bahrani as “the director of the decade” in 2010.

All of Bahrani’s earlier feature and short films have made their world premieres at the Venice International Film Festival and the Cannes Film Festival, garnering wins such as Venice’s FIPRESCI Prize for Goodbye Solo, the London Film Festival’s FIPRESCI Prize for Man Push Cart, the Grand Special Prize at the Deauville Film Festival for 99 Homes, and Film Independent’s Someone to Watch Spirit Award for Chop Shop; as well as a Golden Globe nomination for Michael Shannon (99 Homes). He is a Guggenheim Fellowship winner, has been the subject of retrospectives around the world, and his cinematic oeuvre is housed in the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

For television, Bahrani’s HBO film, Fahrenheit 451, starring Michael B. Jordan and Michael Shannon, was nominated for 5 Emmys, including Best TV Movie, and earned a PGA award for best television film.

For short films, Bahrani’s Plastic Bag (2009) featured the voice of Werner Herzog, was the opening night film of the shorts section at Venice, and later screened at the New York Film Festival. It has been repeatedly called one of the greatest short films of all time. His most recent short documentary, Blood Kin, premiered at the 2018 Venice Film Festival where he also served as President of the Debut Film Jury. His first short documentary, Lift You Up, was made with the Mandela Foundation and premiered at the Venice, Telluride and Toronto film festivals in 2014.

Most recently, Bahrani produced Alexandre Moratto’s Brazilian debut feature, Socrates, which won a dozen international prizes and garnered three Spirit Award nominations in 2019. Currently, he is producing Moratto’s new film, 7 Slaves (Brazil) for Netflix starring Rodrigo Santoro, and Alex Camilleri’s debut feature Luzzu (Malta), which will premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival.

Annette Insdorf is Professor of Film at Columbia University’s School of the Arts, and Moderator of 92Y’s Reel Pieces series. She is the author of Francois Truffaut, a study of the French director's work; two books about Polish filmmakers—Double Lives, Second Chances: The Cinema of Krzysztof Kieslowski and Intimations: The Cinema of Wojciech Has; Philip Kaufman, and the landmark study, Indelible Shadows: Film and the Holocaust (with a foreword by Elie Wiesel). Her latest book is Cinematic Overtures: How to Read Opening Scenes, and she received the Mel Novikoff Award from the 2018 San Francisco Film Festival.
