Marylou Luther is the one fashion journalist that everyone in the industry loves. Her 70-year career has which included stints with the Des Moines Register, The Chicago Tribune, the Los Angeles Times, the LA Times Syndicate, and Fashion Group International afforded her access to the world’s most important and influential designers.
Now in her first book Be-spoke, Revelations from the World’s Most Important Fashion Designers published by Rizzoli, with magical illustrations by Ruben Toledo, Marylou shares quotes garnered from her interviews from 72 designers starting with Christian Dior in 1957 to Kirby Jean-Raymond of Pyer Moss. In between there are witty quotes, inspiring edicts, and personal thoughts about fashion from Geoffrey Beene, Karl Lagerfeld, Rudi Gernreich, Gianni Versace, Pierre Cardin and Fashion Icon’s Stan Herman (who wrote the foreword), Michael Kors, Zandra Rhodes, Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, Norma Kamali, Ralph Rucci, Thom Browne, and more.
Marylou’s favorite quote however is from Coco Chanel from an article she wrote for the LA Times “Fashion fades. Only style remains the same. Only those with no memory insist on their originality. Yves Saint Laurent has excellent taste. The more he copies me, the better taste he displays.”
Marylou Luther and artist Ruben Toledo will join Fern Mallis to celebrate their collaboration and talk about her 7-decade career and share never before published stories about these fashion legends.
