92Y and Entertainment Weekly Present: Netflix’s Dick Johnson Is Dead

Kirsten Johnson in Conversation with David Canfield

Oct 15, 2020

Award-winning documentary filmmaker Kirsten Johnson (Cameraperson) always shared a morbid sense of humor with her dad. So in the final chapter of his life, they decided to try an experiment together: making a movie about repeatedly staging his death.

Join her in conversation with Entertainment Weekly’s David Canfield for a candid conversation about her new documentary, Netflix’s Dick Johnson Is Dead—a moving and hilarious account of family, aging, and mortality like nothing you’ve ever seen. Johnson and Canfield discuss the unique emotional challenges of making the film, the ingenious cinematic tricks she used to stage the deaths, her father’s reaction to the collaboration, the strange beauty of confronting mortality, and much more.
