Join Academy Award-nominated actress June Squibb for a conversation with Scarlett Johansson about her remarkable career onscreen — and her Film Independent Spirit Award nominated turn in Thelma, which will screen after the talk.

Over a 70-year career, June Squibb appeared in the original stage production of Gypsy and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in Alexander Payne’s Nebraska. But in Thelma, at the age of 95, she finds the role of her career. Inspired by a real-life experience of director Josh Margolin's own grandmother, Thelma follows an elderly grandmother on an odyssey across Los Angeles to reclaim $10,000 after she is scammed. Squibb anchors the film — her first starring role — with grit, determination, and infectious humor.

There never was a time when Miss Squibb wasn’t an actress. When anyone asks her “when did you first want to be an actress?” she always answers: “coming out of the womb.” She still remembers her first performance. The 1st grade—she was Goldilocks in Goldilocks and the 3 Bears. She started her career on the stage, working first at the Cleveland Playhouse then moving on to New York. She appeared on Broadway, off-Broadway, off-off Broadway, in Regional Theatre, on cruise ships and USO Tours around the world. Her first Broadway appearance was in the original 1960 production of the musical, Gypsy, starring Ethel Merman – where she played the role of stripper Electra and performed the classic number, “You Gotta Get a Gimmick.’ Her last Broadway appearance was in Waitress in 2018.

In 1990, Squibb made her film debut in Alice, directed by Woody Allen – at the age of 61. This was followed by more films made in New York City – Martin Brest’s Scent of a Woman, Martin Scorsese’s Age of Innocence, In and Out, directed by Frank Oz and Meet Joe Black, also directed by Brest. Next, Squibb played opposite Jack Nicholson in Alexander Payne’s About Schmidt as his wife, Helen. She then moved to Los Angeles and continued in film and TV.

She may be best known for work in Nebraska, her second collaboration with Alexander Payne, also starring Bruce Dern, Will Forte, Bob Odenkirk and Stacy Keach. For her brilliant performance as the foul-mouthed, long-suffering Kate Grant in the black-and-white road dramedy, she was nominated for a SAG award, Golden Globe and the Best Supporting Actress Oscar at the Academy Awards.

Other films include: Hubie Halloween, Table 19, The Humans, Palmer, Family Squares, Godmothered, Soul, Palm Springs, Toy Story 4 and Blow the Man Down. Television appearances include: Little America, Life and Beth, Little Ellen, Room 104, Good Girls, The Good Doctor, Grey’s Anatomy, Shameless, The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, Getting On, Mom, Triumph the Wonder Dog, Glee, Girls, Mike and Molly, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Judging Amy, and ER.

With three films in post-production and a slew in production and prep, Squibb is incredibly busy. Outside of Thelma, she recently shot the comedy feature Lost and Found in Cleveland and the anticipated remake of the cult classic, Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead.

Tony and BAFTA winner and two-time Oscar nominee, Scarlett Johansson was most recently seen starring as ‘Kelly Jones’ in the Sony/Apple TV+ film, Fly Me to the Moon, which she produced with her partners at These Pictures, and as ‘Midge Campbell’ in Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, which made its world premiere during the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, and a leading role as the voice of ‘Elita’ in the Paramount animated feature Transformers One. Johansson’s upcoming projects include her directorial debut Eleanor The Great which she produced and a starring role in the upcoming franchise film series, Jurassic World Rebirth.

In 2017, Johansson teamed with producing partners Keenan Flynn and Jonathan Lia to form These Pictures, a production company dedicated to bringing their unique brand of carefully curated film and TV projects to a global audience.

Johansson received her first two Academy Award nominations, for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress for her performances in Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story and Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit, respectively, becoming the twelfth performer to be nominated for two Oscars in the same year. She also received two BAFTA nominations for these films. Other recent roles include Black Widow, Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, Lucy, Under the Skin, Ghost in the Shell, Isle of Dogs, Sing, Sing 2, and Her, which earned her a Best Actress award at the Rome Film Festival.

Johansson received rave reviews and the Upstream Prize for Best Actress in the Controcorrente section at the Venice Film Festival for her starring role opposite Bill Murray in Lost in Translation, the critically acclaimed second film by director Sofia Coppola. She also won a Tony for her Broadway debut in the Arthur Miller play A View from a Bridge opposite Liv Schreiber. She wrapped her second run on Broadway as ‘Maggie’ in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in 2013.

At the age of 12, Johansson attained worldwide recognition for her performance as ‘Grace Maclean’, the teen traumatized by a riding accident in Robert Redford’s The Horse Whisperer. She went on to star in Terry Zwigoff’s Ghost World, garnering a “Best Supporting Actress” award from the Toronto Film Critics Circle. Her breakthrough role came at the age of 10 in the critically praised Manny & Lo, which earned her an Independent Spirit Award nomination for “Best Female Lead.”

Her other film credits include: Hail, Caesar!, The Jungle Book, Sing, Chef, The Avengers, Don Jon, Hitchcock, We Bought A Zoo, Iron Man 2, In Good Company, A Love Song for Bobby Long, Match Point, He’s Just Not That Into You, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, The Other Boleyn Girl, The Spirit, Girl with a Pearl Earring, The Island, The Black Dahlia, The Prestige, The Nanny Diaries, North, Just Cause, and The Man Who Wasn’t There.

A New York native, Johansson made her professional acting debut at the age of eight in the off-Broadway production of Sophistry, with Ethan Hawke, at New York’s Playwright’s Horizons.
