Jane Pauley leads a discussion with author Roger Rosenblatt and artist Fred Newman stemming from Roger’s new book, A Steinway on the Beach: Wounds and Other Blessings.

Roger’s book contends that wounds – physical, professional, emotional. psychic – are not just accidents of life; they are essential to living fully and well. The Persian poet Rumi said, “The wound is the place where the light enters you.” The light, meaning inspiration, revelation, and spiritual calm.

With Fred Newman’s ethereal paintings accompanying the text, A Steinway on the Beach shows us our lives in all their glory and fragility. How do we live with our wounds? Warily. Bravely. Beautifully.

Roger Rosenblatt

Roger Rosenblatt, whose work has been published in 14 languages, is the author of five New York Times Notable Books of the Year, three Times bestsellers, and seven off-Broadway plays, including Free Speech in America, named one of the Times’s ten best plays of 1991. Among his honors are two George Polk Awards, the Peabody and an Emmy for his essays at Time magazine and on the PBS NewsHour; the Briggs-Copeland appointment in the teaching of writing at Harvard; a Guggenheim Fellowship; seven honorary doctorates; the President’s Medal of the Chautauqua Institution; the Kenyon Review Award for Lifetime Literary Achievement; and a Fulbright to Ireland, where he played on the Irish International Basketball Team. He also plays jazz piano by ear, passionately and poorly.

Fred Newman

Fred Newman is an actor, writer, musician, composer, and sound designer for stage, screen, cartoon, and concert hall, more recently known as the sound-effects guy on the long-running radio show A Prairie Home Companion. After writing his first book MouthSounds, Fred went on to host television shows for Nickelodeon and Disney, work with Jim Henson as a writer, actor and puppeteer and create sounds and voices for movies like Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and TV series such as Fargo. Fred first met Roger Rosenblatt in 1980, on the set of his first talk show, LIVEWIRE a Peabody award-winning show on Nickelodeon. From age ten on, when Fred wasn’t being loud, he was being very quiet - stopping, looking, listening… and painting. Painting was his visual jazz. He is beyond thrilled to have been asked to relate, create and regenerate with the poetry of Roger’s verbal jazz.

Jane Pauley is anchor of the award-winning CBS Sunday Morning, a role she began in September 2016.

Pauley is the recipient of multiple Emmys, the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism, the Edward R. Murrow Award for outstanding achievement and the Gracie Allen Award from the Foundation of American Women in Radio & Television. Pauley is a member of the Broadcast and Cable Hall of Fame.

Pauley joined CBS Sunday Morning in 2014 as a contributor and substitute anchor.

Highlights of Pauley’s work at CBS Sunday Morning include a profile of Hillary Rodham Clinton; an interview with the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg; a fast motorcycle ride with rock star John Mellencamp; the only TV interview with David Letterman about his retirement from late night television; and a joint interview with then Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff.

Before joining CBS News, Pauley was a familiar face on morning, daytime and primetime television. She began her network television career in 1976 as a co-host of NBC’s Today show. She spent 13 years on the morning broadcast, and a decade as the anchor of Dateline NBC, starting in 1992. She was the host of the syndicated daytime series, The Jane Pauley Show, in 2004.

Pauley has written two New York Times bestsellers. A memoir, Skywriting: A Life Out of the Blue (Ballantine Books 2004) and Your Life Calling: Reimagining the Rest of Your Life (Simon & Schuster 2014) based on her award-winning series on Today about people 50+ starting different careers, learning new skills, making a difference or pursuing their dreams.

A longtime advocate in children’s health and education, Pauley is also a highly regarded spokesperson in mental health.

She and her husband, Doonesbury cartoonist Garry Trudeau, are the parents of three grown children.
