ATTENTION – FOR ALL OIL PAINTING STUDENTS: In order to maintain healthy, safe, and environmentally conscious studios the following materials ARE NOT PERMITTED in the 92NY Art Center: Lavender Oil; Odorless Mineral Spirits; Turpentine; Liquin, Neo-Meglip, Galkyd, or any other petroleum based medium; varnish or retouch varnish; any other solvent beside Gamsol.

Supply List for both instructors:

Brushes: Look for brushes suitable for oil painting. Bristle or synthetic can work. - but someone at the art supply store could easily direct you. Select a range of sizes, small and large (from #2 to #10) for: Flats, Rounds and Filberts

Miscellaneous:
  • metal palette knives
  • Small jar cold-pressed linseed oil
  • Drawing pencil and eraser
  • Roll masking tape
  • Latex gloves (box)
  • Paper towels (Bounty)
  • Cotton rags
  • Two small glass or metal jars with lids to hold liquid
  • Bar of Ivory soap or soap for cleaning brushes
  • One disposable paper paltte (11”x 16”)
Paint & Canvas Supply List for James Sheehan’s Class:

Oil Paints: Pick up small tubes for most of the colors and a large one for titanimum white. Purchase only artist-grade paints, not student-grade. Please avoid colors called “tint” or “hue”.

  • alizarin crimson
  • viridian green permanent green med.
  • cadmium red medium
  • cerulean blue
  • cadmium lemon yellow
  • cadmium yellow medium
  • ultramarine blue
  • titanium white
Canvas :
  • Two or three canvas boards or pre-stretched canvases (16” x2 0” and/or 18” x 24”)
  • One canvas pad (16” x 20”)
  • One drawing board larger than 16”x 20” (support for canvas pad sheets)

  • cerulean blue (hue is ok)

  • Black Pink (made by Sennelier and Holbien, if you can’t find just get Ivory Black)
  • titanium white (large tube)

  • Raw umber
  • Transparent red oxide
  • Cobalt blue
  • Sap green
  • Naples yellow
  • Unbleached titanium white
  • green gold
  • permanently green light
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • quinacridone magenta
Painting Surface:
  • Two or three
    • pre-primed panels (9” x 12” and/or 11” x 14”)
    • or pre-stretched canvases (16” x20” and/or 18” x 24”)
  • One canvas pad (16” x 20”)
  • One drawing board larger than 16”x 20” (support for canvas pad sheets)
