Jewelry II & III (Intermediate/Advanced)

All Jewelry II & III students must have the required basic tool kit (see below). Additional tools and supplies will be required and discussed with your instructor. You should come prepared with a small amount of copper or sterling to start and any stones or project ideas you want to accomplish.
Basic Tool Kit
- Saw blades (2 dozen each minimum) #2/0
- Steel Ruler (6") mm/inches
- Hand file - #0 cut, half round
- 1 size 55 drill bit
- Sandpaper 4-pack (silicon carbide, wet/dry) one sheet each of grits:
220, 320, 400, 600
- Solder, hard, medium, easy, 1 ft each. (in the metal you choose to work in)
- container to hold
- Solder pick with wooden handle
- Small paintbrush for flux
- Fine point black sharpie
- Needle Files #2 cut – set of six (with barrette file included)
- Notebook, pencil
- Joyce Chen scissors
- AA tweezers 6”
- Cross locking tweezers with fiber insulated grip (straight or curved tip)
- Scribe (cheapest one)
- Sheet Metal (price varies)
Optional, but very helpful:
- Center Punch
- Split Mandrel for sandpaper (not tapered)
- Forming pliers (half round & flat)
- Beeswax
For Alex Tapnio's class:
- Choice of round 8-10 mm stone, a flat backed cabochon or a faceted stone. More advanced students can bring a cushion, square, or pear.
- 6” x 1/4” 26 gauge fine silver wire OR 6” x 1”, 26 gauge, fine silver sheet
- 3” of 10 or 12 gauge either round or half round wire for the ring shank - if constructing a ring.
For Ann Paly’s class:
For a ring project:
- faceted stone – round, oval or cushion only - 8-10mm
- 6" of fine silver bezel wire 28 gauge x 1/4”
- 3" X 3" of 22 gauge SS sheet metal
- 3" of 10 gauge either round, half round or square wire for the ring shank
For Honey Jeanne Laber’s class:
Bring all the tools that you have already acquired from your previous jewelry classes.
- Charcoal block-compressed (5”x3”)
- Sterling Silver: sheet- 1" x 2 ½, 18 gauge
- sterling silver: 1 ½ feet wire-square or round, 14 gauge
- fine silver: sheet-1"x2 ½, 24 gauge
- fine silver: wire- 2 ½ feet round, 18 gauge
- 5 to 6: 6 mm round cabs from Dikra Gema (56 w 45th, Room #1005)
For David Butler’s class:
- Copper - 6" x 6" x 18
- Sterling silver - 1" x 4" x 18 gauge
For Shuoyuan Bai's class:
- Brass sheet 20ga or 18ga, 6x6" 1
- Hard silver solder approx. 6" wire 1
- Medium silver solder approx. 6" wire 1
- Sterling silver sheet 22ga or 24ga, approx. 2x3" 1
- ***Sterling silver wire round, half round or square, 14ga or thicker approx. 3"
- ***Faceted gemstone round, minimum diameter 6mm 1

Student Guidelines & Studio Rules
- Studios are open 15 min before the start of class.
- Do not enter any studio without your instructor present.
- Do not enter a studio until the previous class has ended and all the participants have left the room and your instructor is present.
- Students must leave studios after their class is over.
- Do not use any tool that you are unfamiliar with as it could permanently damage the tool particularly hammers.
- Only use hammers that you are familiar with like a “hardware hammer” if it doesn’t look familiar don’t use it you will ruin it.
- Exhaust fans must be turned on when torches are being used or any materials is being melted.
- Tools & Torches are coded with six different colors which denote the studios they belong in and their use:
- Blue: S353
- Yellow: S355
- RedL S352
- Orange: S350
- Green: children’s classes
- LIGHT BLUE: INSTRUCTOR’S BOX NOT FOR STUDENT USE.
- If you borrow a tool from another room return it at the end of class time.
- Library books are for reference only please return them in their proper order.
- Students are responsible for cleaning the space they have used including the soldering station and bricks and returning tools at the end of class.
- This is a communal studio please help us make your time here productive by following the above guidelines.
