Collage & Mixed Media for Absolute Beginners

Carla Aurich’s Supply List:
- 9" x 12" or 11" x 14" Bristol Board Pad
- X-acto type knife with a supply of blades
- Cutting mat (12” x 18”)
- 1 pair of good scissors
- 12” or 18” metal ruler with cork or rubber backing
- Pencil, eraser, and Micron pen (any tip size)
- Glue Stick (permanent is better than washable)
- Acrylic matte medium (8 oz.)
- A firm, hard rubber roller or brayer (3”, 4” max.)
- 2 foam brushes—1-2”
- Inexpensive bristle or synthetic brush, 1” and 2” for glue and painting
- Please collect assorted materials to be used in mixed media projects; paper, fabric, envelopes, old books that can be cut up, ribbon, magazines, cardboard, packaging etc. (including old collages you are willing to cut up/rework) Vintage magazines (before the 2000s) specifically encouraged: National Geographic, Star and Sky, Sky & Telescope, LIFE, Look, any vintage art magazines, etc. Old art books/catalogues, childrens books, wallpaper/paint swatches, metallic paper.
- Inexpensive acrylic paints in red, blue, yellow and white (2 or 4 oz. tubes) (optional: any additional assortment of colors)
- Bone Folder
Chelsey Pettyjohn's Supply List:
- 9x12" Bristol Board Pad or Watercolor Paper (Canson is a good brand for both)
- 1 pair of good scissors
- A few Micron pens (any color and tip size)
- A few markers in various colors
- Glue sticks (Elmer's is fine)
- Most important: Collect assorted materials to be used in mixed media projects; colored paper, fabric, envelopes,books that can be cut up, ribbon, tissue paper, old collages you are willing to rework. Especially encouraged: Vintage magazines (before the 2000s): National Geographic, Star and Sky, Sky & Telescope, LIFE, Look, art magazines/books/catalogues, childrens books, wallpaper/paint swatches, metallic paper. The outdoor $1-3 dollar bins at The Strand are a great resource! Upstairs in the art book section they have hundreds of old catalogues as well.
Optional supplies, in order of importance:
- ModPodge (8oz Matte) -a fun medium to try as both adhesive and varnish!
- Gouache paint (LUKAS or Talens from Blick have starter sets for under $12)
- Inexpensive bristle or synthetic brush, flat, 1” or 2” for ModPodge and painting
- KwikStix paint sticks
- X-acto type knife with a supply of blades
- Cutting mat for X-Acto use

- A straight cutting edge such as a ruler

The most important thing! Gather various papers:
- A selection of color or printed papers (such as origami paper, wrapping paper, colored paper, Japanese paper, patterned or construction paper - many stores will sell mixed packs of papers that are fun to use.
