Shababa began in 2007, when Karina Zilberman (founder of Shababa and the Shababa Network) went with her guitar and her beloved puppet, Coco, to the 92nd Street Y lobby to sing, play and celebrate Shabbat.
Karina believed that Jewish life could be a playground, and families could connect with Judaism and with one another in a relaxed, soulful and meaningful environment.
Before long, our lobby was transformed. Children, parents, nannies, grandparents and friends of all ages and faiths were dancing, singing, jumping, smiling and celebrating as a community. That day, Shababa was born.
Now led by Director of Jewish Family Engagement Rebecca Schoffer, 92Y Shababa celebrates the intersection between ancient Jewish tradition and the needs of modern families. At Shababa, we invite everyone in the room to be fully present, to join in the fun, and open their hearts to the joys of Judaism!
Since 2007, Shababa has grown into a wide array of Jewish family experiences for all generations. 92Y Shababa has released three albums of Jewish family music, and hosted concerts and workshops at 92Y and around the world.
