New York, NY: June 20, 2023 – The 92nd Street Y, New York announces concerts with some of the greatest names in jazz as part of the 2024/25 Tisch Music concert season at the renowned cultural center, which recently celebrated its historic 150th anniversary.

This season includes the 92NY debut of the Abdullah Ibrahim Trio, co-presented with the World Music Institute; newly minted Pulitzer Prize winner Tyshawn Sorey with his trio and Sandbox Percussion paying tribute to the legendary Max Roach in his centennial year; and the only NYC concert appearance by Brad Mehldau performing music from his recent album Après Fauré. Allison Miller brings Rivers in Our Veins to our stage with MacArthur “genius grant” winning tap dancer Michelle Dorrance joining as special guest; Tony nominee Amber Iman (Lempicka) celebrates the inimitable artistry of Nina Simone; and the jazz season closes with a mighty blast of sax and powerhouse vocals, courtesy of the Lakecia Benjamin Quartet and special guests Jazzmeia Horn and Gary Bartz.

The 92NY anniversary season was curated by Nicholas Russotto, Executive Director, Tisch Music and also includes a robust slate of classical concerts as well as Lyrics & Lyricists™, the country’s preeminent American Songbook series.

“This season’s jazz programming presents a vital, contemporary, adventurous look at the musical landscape from some of the genre’s most iconic voices and some of its brightest young talent, comments Nicholas Russotto. “Whether drawing global attention to injustices, celebrating the splendor and richness of the natural world, or paying homage to an influential figure in the life of the performers—and whether with instrument, voice, dance, or composition—each of these artists has something important to share with their audience.”

TYSHAWN SOREY TRIO
SANDBOX PERCUSSION
Max Roach at 100
Fri, Feb 21, 2025, 7:30 pm
Winner of the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Music, brilliant composer and multi-instrumentalist Tyshawn Sorey and his trio – pianist Aaron Diehl and bassist Harish Raghavan – and the endlessly inventive Sandbox Percussion celebrate the extraordinary legacy of legendary drummer, composer and activist Max Roach on his centenary. Roach, who played with Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk and other jazz icons, had a deep and little-known connection to The 92nd Street Y, curating a concert series in the 1990s, and performing with artists including Lester Bowie, Julius Hemphill, Christian McBride, and others.

Sorey shares a deep affinity with Roach – as a jazz drummer, a curator, a composer, an arranger, and an endlessly inventive artist in each of those roles. Long a champion of Roach’s music, the trio and the quartet each play sets of music inspired by Roach. The forces come together in the concert’s second half for the New York premiere of a new work by Sorey co-commissioned by 92NY.

Honing her style performing with Clark Terry and Terri Lynne Carrington, with artists from Alicia Keys to Missy Elliott to Anita Baker, and a brilliant weeklong appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Benjamin has arrived at a music all her own. R&B, funk, soul, and Latin influences are evident in everything she performs, whether inspired by Coltrane or Prince. She joins us with a pair of special guests: the charismatic, red-hot vocalist Jazzmeia Horn, who has taken the jazz world by storm ever since winning first prize at the International Thelonious Monk Vocal Competition a decade ago, and 2024 NEA Jazz Master Gary Bartz, who performed with Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Max Roach, and countless others.
