Well-known to readers as an award-winning historian of Soviet atrocities and staff writer for The Atlantic, Anne Appelbaum’s new book is an illuminating combination of reportorial exposé and history showing how modern dictators like Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un are changing the rules of global politics to thwart economic sanctions and crush protest movements at home and abroad with near impunity. It is an urgent warning call to democracies the world over — including the US, ahead of the 2024 elections — to aggressively push back. Hear her and Ben-Ghiat discuss the book’s genesis from her widely-read Atlantic piece, “There is No Liberal World Order,” and how ordinary American citizens can take action and demand that our leaders stand up for democratic ideals.

Anne Applebaum

After seventeen years as a columnist at The Washington Post, Anne Applebaum became a staff writer at The Atlantic in January 2020. She is the author of five critically acclaimed and award-winning books: Twilight of Democracy, Red Famine, Iron Curtain, Between East and West, and Gulag, winner of the Pulitzer Prize. Her latest is Autocracy, Inc.: The Dictators Who Want to Run the World. She divides her time between Poland, where her husband is foreign minister, and Washington, D.C.

Ruth Ben-Ghiat is Professor of History and Italian Studies at New York University. She writes about authoritarianism, propaganda, and democracy protection. She is the recipient of Guggenheim and other fellowships and appears frequently on CNN, MSNBC, and other networks. She publishes Lucid, a Substack newsletter on threats to democracy in the U.S. and abroad. Her latest book, Strongmen: Mussolini to the Present (2020; paperback with a new epilogue, 2021), examines how authoritarian leaders use corruption, violence, propaganda, and machismo to stay in power, and how resistance to them has unfolded over a century. She is a consultant for television and film productions, including the Academy Award-winning 2022 movie Pinocchio (Guillermo del Toro, 2022), and the Netflix docuseries Hitler and the Nazis: Evil on Trial (Joe Berlinguer, 2024).
