Grammy Award–winning classical guitarist David Russell talks with Benjamin Verdery prior to his Art of the Guitar program of Scarlatti, Bach, Giuliani, Granados and Albéniz in transcriptions written by Russell himself.
Russell presents his approach to programming a concert and discusses his relationship with Albéniz’ beloved Asturias; his own transcription of the work ends the evening’s concert. He offers advice on creating arrangements and transcriptions, and explains his approach to learning new music. He ends by urging musicians to develop interests and hobbies outside of music to keep the mind and spirit fresh—“as long as they’re not encroaching on your practice time!”
This talk is part of our Guitar Talks with Benjamin Verdery series.
