Join Academy Award nominee and Tony Award-winning actor Andrew Garfield with MTV’s Josh Horowitz for a conversation about his performance in A24’s We Live in Time, plus clips from the film.

From his breakout roles in The Social Network and The Amazing Spider-Man to his award-winning stage performances in Death of a Salesman and Angels in America, Andrew Garfield has been fascinating audiences for over a decade — and in We Live in Time, he steps into new dramatic terrain. Following a young couple through snapshots of their lives together (played brilliantly by Garfield and Florence Pugh), We Live in Time gradually reveals a truth that will rock them to their foundation — a bold, ambitious, decade-spanning romance. In a live taping of Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, hear Garfield discuss the making of the film — his deeply moving onscreen chemistry with Pugh, his preparation for the role, stories from the set, and more.

Andrew Garfield

Andrew Garfield is a two-time Academy Award® nominee, Emmy Award® nominee, and Golden Globe Award-winning actor whose transformative performances across major studio films, independent features, and on stage have captivated global audiences for over a decade. His body of work continues to evolve with each new role and compelling narrative.

Garfield will next be seen in A24 and StudioCanal’s We Live in Time, opposite Florence Pugh, directed by Irish filmmaker John Crowley and written by Nick Payne. The film will debut at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, with limited release on October 11th and wide release on October 18th. In the UK, it will be released by StudioCanal on January 1, 2025.

Garfield recently just wrapped production on two projects in London: The Magic Faraway Tree, based on Enid Blyton’s classic, directed by Ben Gregor and co-starring Claire Foy; and Luca Guadagnino’s After the Hunt, written by Nora Garrett, featuring Julia Roberts, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Ayo Edebiri.

He was recently seen in FX’s Under the Banner of Heaven, based on Jon Krakauer’s critically acclaimed novel and adapted by Dustin Lance Black. The series follows a Mormon police detective who is shaken when a murder investigation reveals possible links to the Church. Garfield earned his first Emmy nomination for his role as Jeb Pyre, opposite Daisy Edgar-Jones.

In 2021, Garfield starred in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tick, Tick… Boom!, portraying Jonathan Larson. The film follows Jon, a young theater composer working as a waiter at a New York City diner in 1990, while he dreams of creating the next great American musical. His performance earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor and nominations for the Academy Award, Critics Choice, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. The film was named one of AFI’s Top 10 Films of 2021.

He also reprised his role as Peter Parker alongside Tom Holland & Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man: No Way Home. It grossed over $1.7 billion worldwide and counting, making it one of the highest-grossing films of all time. Earlier that year, Garfield appeared in director Michael Showalter’s The Eyes of Tammy Faye, opposite Jessica Chastain, depicting the rise and fall of televangelists Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker.

Garfield's stage work includes the Broadway revival of Tony Kushner’s Pulitzer-Prize winning Angels in America (2018), directed by Tony Award®-winner Marianne Elliott, where he received a Tony Award® for Best Lead Actor in a Play. He also earned Olivier Award, Drama League, and Drama Desk nominations for his portrayal of Prior Walter.

His film credits include Mel Gibson’s World War II epic Hacksaw Ridge (2016), where he played army medic Desmond T. Doss and received nominations for the Academy Awards®, Golden Globe Awards®, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and BAFTA Awards. The film co-starred Vince Vaughn, Hugo Weaving, Brenda Griffiths and Teresa Palmer and was released by Lionsgate on November 4th, 2016.

Additional notable films are Gia Coppola’s Mainstream; David Robert Mitchell’s noir-thriller Under the Silver Lake; Andy Serkis’ drama BREATHE; Martin Scorcese’s Silence opposite Adam Driver; Ramin Bahrani’s 99 HOMES opposite Michael Shannon and Laura Dern; Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which combined grossed over 1.5 billion at the box-office; David Fincher’s The Social Network, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe® for Best Supporting Actor; Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go opposite Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan; Spike Jonze’s robot love story I’M HERE; Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus; Julian Jarrold’s Red Riding Trilogy - 1974; Robert Redford’s LIONS FOR LAMBS; and John Crowley’s BOY A, for which he won BAFTA’s Best Actor Award in 2008.

Garfield made his Broadway debut in 2012 as Biff Loman in Arthur Miller’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Death of a Salesman, earning a Tony® nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play.
