Grammy-nominated percussionist Pedrito Martinez brings his electrifying Afro-Cuban ensemble to 92Y.
Grammy-nominated percussionist and vocalist Pedro Pablo “Pedrito” Martinez was born in Havana, Cuba, on September 12, 1973. He settled in New York City in the fall of 1998 and, by 2000, had been awarded the Thelonius Monk Award for Afro-Latin Hand Percussion and featured in the documentary film Calle 54. Pedrito has recorded or performed with Wynton Marsalis, Paul Simon, Paquito D’Rivera, Eddie Palmieri, Bruce Springsteen and Sting and has contributed to over 50 albums. He was also a founding member of the highly successful Afro-Cuban/Afrobeat band Yerba Buena. He has been named Percussionist of the Year for four straight years by the Jazz Journalists Association and by the Critics Poll for JazzTimes magazine.
