Impacts on Physical and Mental Health: From 9/11 and Beyond

New Strategies for Prevention and Treatment from the World Trade Center Program Clinical Center of Excellence at Mount Sinai
Rosalind Wright and Michael Crane
Rosalind Wright and Michael Crane

This panel discussion will review the current state of the research emerging from the World Trade Center Program Clinical Center of Excellence at Mount Sinai.

The Center was the first to publish a long-term study of the health impacts of the World Trade Center disaster and has subsequently produced a body of knowledge that has identified the physical and mental health problems among 9/11 first responders and recovery workers. Panelists will broaden the conversation to show how environmental conditions, including but not limited to those associated with the World Trade Center disaster, shape human health. Scientific innovation and new technologies developed at Mount Sinai are allowing us to measure our environment in ways never before possible and make advances in how we understand a range of health outcomes, such as asthma, autism, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and ALS. At the same time, we are working to translate these findings into new strategies for prevention and treatment. We hope this conversation will be a step towards cultivating the public consciousness necessary to make meaningful changes in policies and clinical practices to protect health and build healthier, more just communities where we live, play and work.
